A complete GAF roofing system, with stronger wind coverage
We recommend building your new roof with every layer from GAF, installed to GAF's specifications. That qualifies the roof for the GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty, including GAF's WindProven™ wind coverage with no maximum wind speed, instead of the base 130 mph shingle coverage.

Parts of a roof
Seven layers that work as one system
Shingles are only the top layer. Most leaks start at the edges, valleys and vents, which is why we recommend matched GAF components from the deck up.
- 1 Solid roof deck. After tear-off we inspect the decking and replace anything rotted or soft, so the new roof is fastened to a sound surface.
- 2 Leak barrier. A self-adhering GAF membrane in the valleys, along the eaves and around chimneys, vents and skylights, where water tries hardest to get in.
- 3 Roof deck protection. GAF synthetic underlayment over the rest of the deck. It sheds any water that gets past the shingles and keeps the deck dry during installation.
- 4 Starter strip. GAF starter shingles at the eaves and rakes. They seal the first course down so wind cannot get under the roof edge.
- 5 Timberline shingles. GAF Timberline architectural shingles, the main weather surface, nailed to GAF's wind specifications.
- 6 Ridge cap. Matching GAF ridge cap shingles at the hips and ridges, the most wind-exposed part of the roof.
- 7 Attic ventilation. GAF intake and exhaust ventilation lets heat and moisture out of the attic. A hot Texas attic shortens shingle life.
Warranty
Base coverage vs. the GAF Roofing System warranty: the difference is wind
Both warranties cover GAF Timberline shingles for life, with 10 years of non-prorated coverage. What changes is wind: the base Shingle & Accessory warranty covers wind up to 130 mph, while a complete system of LayerLock Timberline shingles and qualifying GAF accessories is covered by GAF's WindProven wind warranty with no maximum wind speed.

Why it matters here
North Texas storms bring real wind
Spring thunderstorms and straight-line winds are what lift shingles at the edges and ridges. That is why our recommended system seals every eave and rake with GAF starter strip, caps every ridge with GAF ridge cap, and is nailed to GAF's wind specifications.
- Base GAF shingle warranty: wind covered for 15 years, up to 130 mph with GAF's special installation.
- Our recommended complete GAF system: wind covered for 15 years with no maximum wind speed (GAF WindProven™, Timberline HDZ with LayerLock plus the qualifying GAF accessories).
- Hail is not a wind warranty claim. Hail damage is usually handled through your homeowners insurance, and we help with insurance roof claims.
Shingle options
GAF Timberline shingles we install
Our standard
Timberline HDZ
GAF's most popular architectural shingle, with LayerLock technology for a wider nailing zone. It is the shingle that qualifies for the WindProven no-maximum wind warranty.
Timberline UHDZ
GAF's thickest Timberline shingle, for a deeper, more dimensional look on the roof.
Timberline AS II
Impact-resistant (UL 2218 Class 4) for North Texas hail. Many Texas insurers offer a discount for Class 4 roofs; ask your agent.
